I’d like to give it 4 stars but something major (to me ) holds me back. Even though the author went to great lengths to describe the tower, I was never able to grasp it. It became this thing in my head that I had to overlook and just focus on other parts of the story. The tower is so integral to the storyline that I found myself frustrated very often. Maybe it was just me.... but even looking at the cover didn’t help and I just couldn’t visualize their world. If I had been able to, I know I would have enjoyed this much more. The lashes partially eluded me as well. I didn’t understand exactly what they were. I had to picture them as Spider-Man’s webs in order to get past it. Like just how big IS this apparatus? How does it connect to her? Is it threaded through special clothing only?Anything that I tried to piece together from the story regarding lashes, frustrated me so I blew it off. That said, I was made to care about the characters and look forward to seeing what happens next.
Other than the shade books, I think this might turn out to be my favorite Bella Forrest series yet! This book is a very emotional, fast paced read that hooks you in the first few pages and doesn't let go! In this futuristic dystopian society, in order to keep peace within the Tower, everyone is a slave to a wristband that evaluates the amount of positive and negative thoughts they think and converts that into a number. Citizens with lower numbers are treated inferior to the higher numbered citizens. Free thinking is discouraged and anyone who asks too many questions or tries to act outside the guidelines is reprimanded by the Knights who keep order in the tower. Liana is a squire in training to be a knight. Her parents hold the highest positions as Knight Commanders, and have high expectations for her to do the same. However, she has no desire to join them. As she becomes more and more dissatisfied with her surroundings and overwhelmed by pressure from her parents, her number starts dropping dangerously low and she is required to be medically treated with mood altering drugs designed to suppress negativity and replace with complacency. Before she begins treatment however, she has a run in with a handsome young man whose cocky personality doesn't match the high number on his wristband. When her treatment stops working, she finds a pill he left behind and wonders if that could be the reason for his unusually high number. Desperate to bring her number up, she takes the pill and hopes for the best. Miraculously her number jumps several points and her parents are thrilled. She is then for the first time held in high regard by her parents and her mentor and is assigned a new duty. Going to a part of the Tower she has never had access to before, she makes a horrific discovery of things that have been secretly going on within the Tower walls. Terrified for her safety and the safety of her friends, she begins a journey to stop the terrible goings on before its too late to save the ones she loves. Oh... and she does take time to spark up a little romance along the way. 😉 This is going to be a GREAT series...I can't wait for the next book to be released!!
Bella Forrest did a fantastic job with this one. If you’re a fan of strong female leads, a dash of romance, and a flawed post-apocalyptic society, then this is the book for you.The author managed to do a lot of world building without hindering plot advancement, and not too many details with the potential to bore the reader. The Tower is life, and every person must dedicate their lives to service the Tower. But with a flawed ranking system bound for failure, how can a curious Liana keep her head down?
So props for the creativity of the world. That being said, the reason I had to rate the book low was because this author has the most annoying writing style I have ever encountered. Ever!!! Here is an example:"Hi Grey.""Hi there, how's it going?"[Now you have to read 4-8 paragraphs about the history of the world, the political situation, the climate, who my friends are, where we are geographically, and a brief bit about my parents, all to justify my upcoming answer of 'not bad'][But first, I also inserted a couple more paragraphs about my boyfriend. Just cuz.]"Not bad, thanks."Often I just ended up skipping ahead to the next set of quotations, just to attempt to salvage the narrative! And I found that usually it didn't matter. I could just keep going and not look back. Also I never want to see the word "lash" in print again. Talk about over-used!The dystopian setting isn't bad, but even after three books, I still don't know how we got there. Was the tree-home-thing built because the world is ending naturally-- as in the sun is turning into a red giant and the world will literally end soon, or was the country was nuked into slag and will eventually recover? Or was it something completely different? Who knows? Not important I guess, even though the group threatens to leave the shelter of the tree-thing (somehow the most important structure in the history of mankind doesn't have a name) and go outside. If you can struggle through the torturous writing style, it's not a bad story. But getting there is a LOT of work on the part of the reader.
I'm so on the fence with this book! It's well written, has great action and emtional appeal but I found myself so bored with most of the content. The plot is pretty obvious for the most part, very few surprises. The main charater, Liana, is boring, typical and has no depth and no real growth. The only real interesting charater, are her friend Zoe and new friend Quess, but only slightly more than Liana. Everyone seems to just go along with Liana once she logically explains why she is right and why they should do things her way, no rethinking, no pushback, just giving up. I feel like most of the book Liana just goes on and on with her internal struggles. I'm reading the second book only because the first book ended on a cliff hanger, but it's more of the same internal struggles and mundane, trypical storyline. I wanted to like this book and there are lots of great parts, it just doesn't do it for me.
