Why Do Birds illuminates the rise and fall of the golden age of ’60s-’70s pop radio the way Sunset Boulevard eulogized Hollywood’s golden age or Father of Frankenstein made us think and feel deeply about some silly monster movie. It places the iconic in the realm of the everyday. Ships pass in the night without ever really knowing; superstars link bracelet-to-backpack with fans whose favor they have yet to curry. Three concurrent and increasingly parallel stories intersect in ways expected and surprising, and—in what I think is the book’s masterstroke—Hoerburger overlays this with multi-generational sweep that becomes the heart and soul of his story. Once he knows he has us in his spell, he daringly throws us back in time to plant historic seeds that will bloom in ways we can’t imagine. Likewise his cool tone and playful love of language let us know we are looking back through a modern lens. The book deals with real incidents and actors but rarely chooses to name names. That lends a sense that this story is central and shared; we all know it even if we don’t because it’s part of our common cultural DNA. Finally, the book wisely knows that the things that hurt us most deeply can become our healing shelter. Why Do Birds may riff out loud on “Close to You,†but deep down it’s been humming “It’s Going to Take Some Time†all along.
Within a few pages, Why Do Birds sucked me in and I could not put this book down. As a chapter closes and we leave one character, I could not wait for that person's storyline to continue later in the book. Then the same thing happened to me for the next chapter's character. At times, the writing is so poetic and moving that I had to immediately go back for a re-read. And I loved trying to guess who the famous people were, which slowed me down a bit as I hopped onto the internet to read histories from the era. Who knew that X was friends with Y! Having survived 1982 myself, the realism of the writing often propelled me back in time as long-forgotten memories reappeared. Highly recommended! Enjoy!!
