I watched the movie first so take my opinions with an extra large grain of salt. The author goes above and beyond to develop his characters which inevitably leads to some slow points in the book. But these should be viewed in a much larger scope of the Jack Ryan Novels and the attention the author invests towards developing the main characters pays off in the end. Jack Ryan is a family man so you're going to read quite a few pieces that offer you a glimpse into family man life. It's tedious but necessary.Switching gears now. The cold logic and precision of the antagonists is something to send a shiver down your spine. Villains fueled by blind emotion are not scary. They screw up eventually and then they're done. In Patriot Games, the author develops clever and objective villains (most of them) forcing the good guys to think one step ahead at all times.Overall, very please with the book and plan on reading more Jack Ryan Novels in the future.

From the inventive mind of Tom Clancy comes a story that is chronologically first in the Jack Ryan storyline. It's not the best of the books but it's pretty good. Clancy is a good enough author that he can take a highly implausible storyline and make it fun to read for me. You do have to get past the Bromance Clancy has with the military and anyone with a badge which can get a little annoying at times, but that's just the way he is. This book tells the story of how Jack Ryan came to work for the CIA after stopping a terrorist attack on The Prince and Princess of Wales in England.

Finally got around to reading one of the 20th centuries most successful authors and wishing I had not waited so long. Patriot Games is a great book for all fans of espionage and cold war intrigue. Interesting characters, good plotting, and thrilling action sequences were the highlights of this book. I would have given it 5 stars except I felt it was just a bit too long and dragged somewhat during the scenes with Jack Ryan and his wife and daughter. Still, it makes me eager to read more of the continuing saga of Jack Ryan and his rise in the CIA. And now, I can finally watch the film adaptation of this book after more than 25 years.

I read this book when it was first published and enjoyed it. I enjoyed the whole first set of Jack Ryan books plus the background books like Without Remorse. This order was for the audio cd that I can listen to while driving or working around the house. If you've only seen the movie, read or listen to the unabridged book and you'll throw the movie in trash! Great action, very believable story line and a lot of action.

This is my second Tom Clancy book. Not quite as good or entertaining as "Without Remorse" which is tied for first place with my favorite book of all time (gates of fore by stephen Pressfield)I took a star off because while inwas anxious to see how the bad guys were going to do what I expected them too... it took quite a while for them to get to the point.I subtracted another star because the bad guys did exactly what I expected then too... then the good guys reacted as i expected them too...Otherwise a good book and an interesting chapter in the Jack Ryan series.

This book has aged surprisingly well for one that's firmly rooted in 80s political issues. The characters are believable, the suspense is real, the plot twists are clever, and even the hundreds of pages of boring stuff held my interest.I read this book on my Kindle and did not experience any of the formatting issues reported by other reviewers. (There are some typos, but they are mostly trivial aside from a few instances of an l becoming a t.)

I'll be surprised if anyone cares what I think about Mr. Nancy's novel, but suffice to say it was a very enjoyable read!I strongly suggest you read it if you have only seen the movie. As usual, books impart much more nuance and information than any movie possibly can. Besides which, directors, screenwriters and studio execs always make changes in the story that authors may or may not agree with, having signed away their veto powers once they sign their paychecks. Then there's the matter of the ending . . .

The novel did not age well. It feels naïve and over the top - a less than desirable mix. In hindsight, it is easy to understand why it was such a hit in its heyday, when the world was a bit more innocent, and satellite images something still all too close to science fiction. But our post-9/11, Google Maps reality is too different for it to really make any sens. The writing also felt way to slow at the beginning, which almost made me put down the book for good. Only the personal goal to go through all Jack Ryan novels kept me going.Clancy's style is clear, and when unhinged by the slow pace and centered in the suspense of the spy-trade, it was really enjoyable, though. Unfortunately, it quick resumed what we would call naïveté these days.In short, it had its time, but it is now past.
