Fascinating information on what lawyers look for in a jury
Very entertaining book
I heard the author, Alice Weiser, speak at a luncheon -- she was humorous, articulate, interesting, with a wealth of fascinating experiences from her career of helping lawyers pick juries based on their handwriting and using handwriting analysis in other fascinating ways. I was eager to learn more and so bought her book right then (for a very high price), on impulse.Bad impulse. This is one of the most poorly written books I've read. It starts with multiple chapters of repetitive self-promotion, then, finally, addresses various characteristics of handwriting, with each little topic illustrated not with handwriting examples, but with cutesy clip art.I couldn't figure out who the book was written for -- the first chapters lumber by in a turgid, passive-voice, nearly impenetrable legal style, but then switches between this and annoying cutesy-ness. It is very poorly organized, and although I REALLY wanted to know more about handwriting analysis, I couldn't figure it out from this book. There is very little rhyme or reason to the way material is presented. The formatting is clumsy (think first-time self-publisher) and editing is non-existent -- grammar and spelling errors proliferate with careless abandon. Half-way through I gave up the effort to read this punishing tome and tossed it.So why am I giving this book two stars? Well, I liked Alice and I thought she was an interesting and knowledgeable speaker, and I didn't want to trash her totally. And then, if I only gave it 1 star, you might dismiss me out of hand as a crank.I feel bad about giving this book review about a person I liked and respected... Alice, hire a good editor who can translate your personal appeal to the page!
I am a personnel director with a Fortune 500 company, and recently picked up Judging the Jury to guide me in executive placement. It is amazing how quickly I have learned the techniques described in this book and honed in on valuable keys to such traits as honesty, loyalty, and intergrity - valuable information when selecting key personnel. I must tell you it has been truly an awakening experience. This book has become my recruiting Bible, second only to the EEOC guidelines. I would highly recommend it to anyone whose job depends on making valid judgments on employees, friends, business associates and those occasional sales reps, whose honesty we sometimes question.
Not very well written. Information flow is not good. This is not a book I would use if I needed a text book for a class. If I really wanted to read a person using body language, or if I really wanted to analyze a handwriting sample, I'd definitely need a better, more fluid, more comprehensive resource.
