About the Author
Mark Lardas holds a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, but spent his early career at the Johnson Space Center doing Space Shuttle structural analysis, and space navigation. An amateur historian and a long-time ship modeler, Mark Lardas is currently working in League City, Texas. He has written extensively about modeling as well as naval, maritime, and military history.

Very good book on a somewhat obscure naval race. Brazil, Argentina, and Chile obtained five dreadnought-type battleships (having ordered seven) even though none of those countries had any military need for them. It's amazing, sort of, what national and governmental / political egos can result in. Oh well, I guess it was an early 20th century South American mini-version of the Cold War, in which weapons were bought regardless of need.The book describes the technical features of each ship. There are tabulations of dimensions and performance characteristics. Finally, there are discussions of the political origins and the eventual fates of each ship. None of them ever fired their guns at another warship, although a couple of them fired their guns as part of mutinies and attempted revolutions.Two ships were purchased or seized by Britain after WW I started: the ex-Brazilian "Rio de Janeiro" (also known as the ex-Turkish "Sultan Osman I") became HMS "Agincourt." The Chilean ship "Almirante Latorre" became HMS "Canada." Both ships fought at Jutland in May of 1916. In addition, the Chilean "Almirante Cochrane" became the British aircraft carrier "Eagle."
In the early 1900's, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile fell into a naval arms race. Wealthy from export earnings, the three countries sought to acquire modern battleships from overseas suppliers. Their purchases came at a point in time when first class navies were transitioning to so-called "dreadnoughts". The timing of their purchases meant the three South American countries would serendipitously have first class navies.In fact, as author Mark Lardas narrates, rising costs and the outbreak of the First World War would disrupt the threatened arms race. The battleships took awhile to reach their owners in South America, some after service under other colors, and most seem to have seen action only in internal security matters. The narrative covers the big picture story first, then circles back to talk about individual vessels. The text includes a nice selection of period photographs and modern illustrations, almost with technical data. Recommended for its attention to an interesting and largely overlooked item of naval history.
I liked how all 3 country's battleship programs were treated separately, rather than in an all inclusive timeline as I've seen in other publications. For me, each nation's experiences being treated one at a time is easier to follow.The only real drawback of this book is it's brevity. I feel this is, unfortunately, a common weakness of all of these short treatments of the Osprey Press sort: the information presented is accurate, but for a "nuts and bolts" kind of guy such as myself I prefer more depth. That costs this book one star. Very good as far as it goes, but if you want more in depth detail you'll need to look elsewhere.
A good but technically light introduction to South American dreadnaughts. Since these battleships never foug9 an enemy under their country's flag, battle performance islimitef. ( theywere involved in numerous rebellions, and got to be important domestic political forces)

As Britain and Germany were caught up in a naval arms race that would lead up into the First World War, and as other nations in Europe were ensnared in naval arms races as well, what could almost be called a comic opera parody was going on in South America. Brazil, flushed with money from coffee and rubber, ordered two dreadnoughts, beating out such notable European powers as France, Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. Faced with the need to keep up with the Brazilian Joneses, Argentina ordered a pair. Chile, having an ongoing border dispute with Argentina, ordered their own pair of dreadnoughts.If you have never heard of this story, this book is a wonderful introduction to this tale. You will learn of the ships and their careers, and you will shake your head at the seven gun turret monster that Brazil ordered, but then was sold to Turkey, but ended up in the Royal Navy when the World War broke out. You will see nations end up nearly in bankruptcy (as well as one shipyard), and you will shake your head as a nation realizes that dreadnoughts can be dangerous in the hands of mutinous sailors.This fits well in the Osprey New Vanguard series, with the strengths and limitations in that series. I was very grateful for many of the pictures in this book, as I had not seen them previously.
