Review

In her humorous, down-to-earth style, Myquillyn shows us how to stop trying so hard and instead create a space where we can exhale and simply be ourselves. Isn't that what home is all about? (Lisa Leonard, jewelry designer and writer)My home is my happy place, and it's even happier thanks to Myquillyn's encouragement, know-how, and practical guidance. She's taught me about decorating math, wall sabbaths, and personal style, and I adore the results I get to enjoy every day in my home. If you want to make your own home more warm, inviting, comforting, and welcoming, I highly recommend this book. (Anne Bogel, author of I'd Rather Be Reading)Here is what I love about Myquillyn, and what I believe sets her most apart: she is primarily concerned with the way a space makes you feel. Her ultimate goal is to help people create spaces where people feel welcome, comfortable, cozy, relaxed, refreshed, and inspired. Contrary to a form-over-function culture, Myquillyn has developed a way to coach us into creating spaces where the people we love--and ourselves!--can feel our best. And lucky for us, she just happens to help us to make these spaces beautiful along the way. (Lindsay Sherbondy, Owner and Designer, Lindsay Letters)Cozy Minimalist Home puts to rest once and for all the assumption that minimalism needs to be cold, rigid, or impersonal. Quite the contrary--it is a life filled with passion, purpose, and beauty. Thank you, Myquillyn, for showing that to be true in this beautiful book and work of art. (Joshua Becker, Founder of Becoming Minimalist and author of The More of Less)I was hardly aware of the low-grade sense of failure I had every time I walked into my sunroom. It sounds dramatic, but I think a lot of women struggle with feeling shame about the way our houses look. I knew something wasn't right but I didn't know why. And then I learned the Cozy Minimalist way and everything changed. Step by step, I applied Myquillyn's Cozy Minimalist method to my sunroom, and it went from being my least favorite room in the house to my most favorite within days. I didn't have to take out a loan, sell my birthright, or win the lottery to make the changes. Now that I know these simple principles, I can apply them to any room in my house. We have enough to fight against in this world. Our homes should be the last place on earth where we feel shame. I'm so grateful for this beautiful, life-giving book. (Emily P. Freeman, The Nester's little sister and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Simply Tuesday)In Cozy Minimalist Home, Myquillyn explores what's missing from the minimalist versus hoarder conversation: in life and in decor, what does it mean to have enough? With an affirming approach, gentle guidance, and trusted tips, she's the grace-based KonMari we've been waiting for. Here's to more style and less stuff-within our own four walls and beyond. (Erin Loechner, blogger at DesignforMankind.com and author of Chasing Slow)Myquillyn Smith's approach to living and decorating has inspired me for a decade. No home designer in America is better suited to speak to the everyday woman who craves beauty but doesn't have the time and energy for perfection. Her words and style have impacted my perspectives about design and have helped me transform my house into a home. (Jessica N. Turner, author of the bestselling books The Fringe Hours and Stretched Too Thin)Cozy Minimalist Home is more than just a book about decorating; it is a manifesto of sorts that I wholeheartedly adopt as my own: more style with less stuff. Myquillyn's down-to-earth, practical decorating advice and doable step-by-steps are what we house-lovers want. But it's her big-sisterly encouragement to use our homes to serve and gather and shelter and nurture that truly makes this book a must-read for anyone wanting their home to be a lovelier place. (Emily Lex, founder of Jones Design Company)Myquillyn is that trusted friend who comes over in the midst of your home-headaches and in her wise, no-nonsense way, gets to the heart of your decisions about decor and dwelling. She elevates minimalism without sacrificing style, sets the stage for hospitality minus the production, and empowers even the most intimidated home decorator to make simple styling decisions that count. Cozy Minimalist Home will give you the freedom and confidence you need to simplify your style and make your house your own. (Ruth Chou Simons, artist and bestselling author of GraceLaced and Garden of Truth; founder of gracelaced.com)Finally, a book that gives you permission to be minimalist and be cozy, to live with less and enjoy a beautiful home. If you think minimalism results in a cold, empty house, Cozy Minimalist Home will show you how to fill your home with what matters most to you and your family. This lovely book is as warm, cozy, and simple as you'll want your home to be. (Courtney Carver, author of Soulful Simplicity)

For my whole adult life I’ve lived in a cycle of continuously shopping for my home. I love antiquing and also home stores like HomeGoods or even just the decor section at Michaels. Homes are easy to shop for because, unlike clothing, the stuff always fits. Until it doesn’t. If you're overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you own, but you're not sure how to fix it or if you like the idea of minimalism, but don't think you could ever fully commit to it, then this book is for you. Myquillyn Smith has given us a new option with Cozy Minimalism. Her approach just makes sense. She lays it out in a way that is fun and realistic. She tells you where to start and gives you the tools to handle your whole house. One of the things that I love most about her approach is that the end goal is not for you to have a house just like hers. The end goal is for you to have a house that is 100% your style, and that functions beautifully for the way your family uses it. Overall I really enjoyed the book and I’m excited to put her methods to work. (I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review).

This book is not a guide book to interior design with lots of practical information about “how to proportion your gallery wall” or “the right way to pair interesting throw pillows.” It is also not a glossy, high-end interior design book full of fanciful musings by professional designers about creating some picture-perfect unused drawing room for their wealthy upper eastside clients. Rather, it documents a normal person’s imperfect fixer-upper and her journey to find a balance between simplicity and coziness. You’ll read about she grew as a designer, but more importantly a homeowner and an occupier of space, with little design tips and things to consider along the way. She shares her mistakes, the process by which she made her decisions, her “lessons learned.” She gives you a lot of things to think about without feeding them to you in bullet points. There is a lot of text. Design photos take second place, and there’s not many of them compared to what you would expect out of an interior design book. The writing can be... less focused than desired at times but can also be expected from a personal story.Readers looking for succinct hard and fast rules, straightforward design lessons regarding portion, balance, texture etc. and practical tips will have to work a little to find them (and for these readers, I highly recommend the two Domino books on interior design). However, I think this book will really resonate with all us lifestyle minimalists who needed something to bridge the gap between wanting clean spaces and uncluttered counters, but finding the minimalist aethestic too cold and hard and unforgiving. Her struggle between real life (three teenage boys, big dog) and “prettiness,” clean empty spaces and snuggling up to a mountain of throw pillows is so relatable. Her description of her pile of cute, cheap decor (looking at you Home Goods and Target) is literally a snapshot out of my life. Or well, my old life before I decluttered everything and now feel like my home is lacking a little personality and warmth. And for people like me, this is the book we needed.

Cozy Minimalist Home gives me permission to decorate the way I've always wanted to but thought I was doing something wrong.I co-host a podcast called Minimalist Moms, so I feel like I'm expected to keep my home minimal, but when I take too much away, it feels cold and unfriendly. Plus, I'm not comfortable and that's hardly any way to live, right?Myquillyn shows you how to make your home cozy AND minimalist. She teaches you how it's more about making your home function for you than following a certain design aesthetic. Then, she walks you through how to decorate a room from start to finish, step-by-easy-step. And, guess what? I was doing everything in the wrong order. No wonder my rooms never felt quite right! Her advice is as about as practical as it comes and easy for everyone to accomplish. No design degree required! My husband and I have been debating about which mirror to put over our fireplace for months but I didn't want to order it from a catalog because I would lose $100 in shipping costs to return if it wasn't right. After I finished her chapter on wall art, I ordered that mirror with confidence - and saved money! This book has literally already paid for itself several times over!Favorite Quotes:- More for the sake of more is just as empty as less for the sake of less.- Less is the gift to myself that keeps on giving.- Every limitation has a beautiful workaround.- One of the best parts of cozy minimalism is this odd sensation you begin to experience – one that most people never allow themselves to feel. It’s called "enough."

I loved every page of Cozy Minimalist Home! This book feels like having a professional organizer, who also happens to be a dear friend, come in your home and show you what to do! Myquillyn Smith writes in a way that makes having a beautiful, intentional home feel so doable for everyone. Her down-to-earth approach and step-by-step process makes so much sense for those of us who struggle to know what to do next. This book will stay close by as reference as I tackle each room in our home. This book is a must-read for those who crave beauty, simplicity, and coziness in their homes.
