Buddy Buys A Dump (Hate), by Peter Bagge

Review

“As Peter Bagge has progressed from raging against the machine in his youth to mild fussing in his middle age, his comics have become no less entertaining.” - Hillary Brown, Paste“As a writer, Bagge rivals the showrunners of prestige cable dramas in his capacity for sharp, character-revealing gestures. ... Although it should be unsurprising by now, it’s worth mentioning that Bagge handily elicits authentic pathos in his typically loose-limbed, bug-eyed style. His deceptively slapsticky approach, equally indebted to Harvey Kurtzman and Looney Tunes, draws the comedy out of some dark and all too relatable moments...” - Luke Geddes, The Comics Journal“...[Buddy Buys a Dump] captures a stage of life―the onset of adulthood―as well as or better than the original comics captured being young and dysfunctional in the days of grunge. It's an honest progression that remains funny, sharp, ridiculous, and expertly cartooned.” - Jeremy Nisen, Under the Radar“...I am not, nor will I ever be like Buddy Bradley. I certainly know the type, however, and therein lies the appeal of Buddy as a main character. The revolving cast of nut jobs that Buddy attracts to himself, and is attracted by, doesn’t hurt the appeal or comic potential either, nor does the sharp wit, great dialogue and Bagge’s unique style of rubbery, quavering limbs, popping eyes and massive pie holes shouting and swearing off the pages.” - Chris Auman, Sound on Sight“Bagge’s humor is right out of a John Waters movie -- loud, outrageous, sometimes transgressive.” - Wally Bubelis, Unshelved

About the Author

Peter Bagge created Hate, one of the best-selling and most formative comic book series of the ’90s. Born in New York in 1957, after graduating from the School of Visual Arts, Bagge contributed to and, along with R. Crumb, edited the underground anthology Weirdo. Since then Bagge's numerous original graphic novels and collections of comics have won him two Harvey Awards (one for Best Cartoonist in 1991), an Inkpot Award, and garnered six Eisner Award nominations. His social commentary cartoons run in the magazine Reason, and his recent biography of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger is critically acclaimed. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

I've been waiting for this collection for years - I am a huge fan of Peter's work, and while his other recent projects (Other Lives, Reboot) have been interesting and entertaining, it's his Buddy Bradley chronicles which show the artist at his relaxed peak in terms of art, story, and characterization. What's most impressive is the way Buddy and Lisa have developed and grown as characters in a realistic way, yet remain true to their essential personalities. The stories and pacing are clean and tight, and contain all the wonderful cartoon absurdity and sarcasm we have grown to love. Also worth mentioning is the excellent color work. Highly recommended, although for full context one would want to start with The Bradleys, Buddy Does Seattle and Buddy Does Jersey.

Book three of the Buddy Bradley saga flashes forward in Buddy's life and we find him married and raising a son...and owning a dump and selling scrap metal! Catch up with some familiar faces from the first two volumes and the ongoing, often jaw-dropping exploits of this dysfunctional family! Great comics!

nice collection

Great as always from Bagge.

This book is great! I'm one of the people who likes HATE in full color!

Bought this as a gift.

Bagge was/is an icon as far as alternative comics go. He was definitely at the cusp of a movement in the late 80s-early 90s. In his comic book "Hate", Peter created the everyman slacker Buddy Bradley. As fate would have it, Bagge lived in Seattle when the whole "Grunge" movement happened. He basically had a front row seat, like the original Underground cartoonists of the 60s had during the psychedelic San Francisco movement. He successfully used his comic to comment on the absurdity of youth movements while using the Bradley character as a stand-in for himself. After 30 issues, Bagge discontinued the series to concentrate on other work. Some of this work has been interesting (Other Lives HC), some not so much (Bat Boy: The Weekly World News Comic Strips by Peter Bagge), and some (particularly the recently released Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story)has been quite good. However, nothing seems to have captured the public's imagination like the Bradley/Hate stories, despite the fact that Bagge has been sporadically continuing Buddy's saga in the (semi)annual Hate magazine. As a previous reviewer stated, these stories didn't seem very special when taken singularly. Matter of fact, some (especially the whole "eyepatch" scenario) seemed dumb. Bagge was moving away from reality-based stories and inserting typical cartoon/comic book characterization. However, when reading these later stories collected together (as in this book), a coherence comes together. Bagge is a great cartoonist, and even his second-tier material is pretty good. In no way is this book as good as the previous Buddy stories from the 90s (Buddy Does Seattle: The Complete Buddy Bradley Stories from "Hate" Comics (1990-1994) (Vol. 1) (Hate), or Buddy Does Jersey: The Complete Buddy Bradley Stories from "Hate" Comics (1994-1998) (Vol. 2) (Hate)), but any fan of those stories will enjoy catching up with middle-aged Buddy!

Back in the 1990s I was a huge fan of the "Hate"-comics. So it was kinda heartbreaking when the magazine stopped publication, and Bagge instead started releasing on "Hate"-annual a year. I managed to get hold of a few of these, and I was frankly fairly underwhelmed. One ten-page "Buddy"-story a year seemed like so little that it was almost worse than nothing. Plus the stories didn't even seem THAT great, they focused on fairly trivial matters after Buddy and Lisa had a kid. I basically concluded that Peter Bagge was a 'Has Been' case.Reading the stories now more than ten years later I realize that I was wrong. These stories work! Or at least they work when they're gathered together in one volume without a year between. And the later stories in this book (which I hadn't read before) even return (sort of) to the sex, drugs, rock n roll and madness territory of earlier books. Very enjoyable - Recommended!
