Marie Rayner is the author of the award-winning blog The English Kitchen, where she aims to "debunk the myths of English cookery, one recipe at a time," with her unique North American spin. The absolute best book for the novice to a renowned chef. Marie has included it all. It's a huge book that looks beautiful both inside and out. It would also be a great addition to a coffee-table book for your guests to look through and enjoy. Her stories, her recipes, and illustrations are set around the English Kitchen and include many easy and enjoyable recipes as well as any large dinner items that you would love to make. I highly recommend, and say don't be put off by the $$ of this book. It is indeed a highly profiled book that reads like a culinary encyclopedia. Well worth every penny~
I have been following Marie Rayner's blog for quite sometime now and was delighted when she decided to author a cookbook gathering her wonderful recipes into one comprehensive book. This magnificent volume exceeded even my high expectations. It is huge, well-written, beautifully designed and a sheer pleasure to use. There are many, many color photos illustrating the recipes, which are laid out clearly in an easy to read format. (So many newer cookbooks these days are laid out with fancy page graphics in hard-to-read color variations that make them actually annoying to actually use.) Measurements are provided for both weight and volume (for cooks like me that don't use a scale, but rely on cup measurements.) The only problem I have with this cookbook is deciding which recipe to try next! Seriously, this is one awesome cookbook. Chock-full of traditional English 'home cooking' recipes that are classics as well as a wide variety of recipes and suggestions for every meal of the day as well as cookies/biscuits, scones, cakes, coffee-cakes, puddings--you name it. Whether you're fixing a holiday dinner or a quick supper from leftovers, this one has you covered.I love a cookbook you can read as well as enjoy using. Having lost count of my own collection (it's well over 800 cookbooks), this one has risen to the top of my list of ones I'd have to take with me if I had to escape immediately. Years ago, I acquired "Great British Cooking: A Well-Kept Secret" (Jane Garmey), which, up until The English Kitchen, was the book I relied on for tried and true British recipes. That introduced me to English 'home cooking.' Marie Rayner's book has taken it up to yet another level.The English Kitchen is both a cookbook you can enjoy reading and enjoy using. Ms. Rayner should be justly proud of having created such an amazing, practical and utterly useful cookbook. If I could rate it higher than 5 stars, I certainly would.
I received my book yesterday and I am so impressed!! There are pages upon pages of beautifully illustrated recipes with easy to find ingredients and easy to follow instructions. I know Marie's recipes and they are always a winner. It is clear she has put her heart and her multiple talents into this book. I look forward to purchasing more of these beautiful books to give as Christmas gifts this year! Well Done, Marie!!
This is a wonderful cookbook, with everything that you could possibly need to know about the, English kitchen. It contains wonderful everyday recipes as well as recipes that you could cook for the fanciest of dinners. It is a substantial cookbook, with beautiful illustrations and photos, done by the author, Marie Rayner. It is well worth your money, as you would never have to have another cookbook, as this one has a category for almost any occasion! The recipes and directions are easy to understand, and the ingredients are readily available everywhere. I love this cookbook!
Ms. Rayner's recipes and stories are pure bliss for an Anglophile like me. The recipes are a great mix of traditional English dishes and modern British cuisine and that mix has presented to me a challenge I enjoy in the kitchen. I am a history buff who always focuses on the foods available at any point in history so the traditional English dishes are a perfect for when I want to create an "historical" meal and the more modern recipes have been a real learning experience for me since I've mainly focused on historical recipes until now. The recipes are easy to follow. The illustrations are wonderful and the stories are interesting. I feel like I know Ms. Rayner a bit better now and would recommend this cookbook for anyone who enjoys preparing food for friends and family.
I have been making and enjoying Marie's recipes for years that I received off of her blog. When her cookbook, "The English Kitchen: An Anglophile's Love Note to English Cuisine" was published, I HAD to have a copy and it was like a joyful Christmas morning when it arrived! Marie Rayner is a trained chef and worked as one so she knows how to craft well, delicious, comforting food dishes. Her recipes are easy to follow. No guess work involved. This huge cookbook consisting of 710 pages of recipes and pictures do not disappoint. Looking forward to making many culinary delights from this wonderful book of tried and true recipes.
