I love the Fatal series, and most of the books in the series are outstanding and fascinating. A few haven’t been as interesting as I’d hoped, but the series overall sets the standard for love/intrigue/erotica stories. Unfortunately, this one to me is a little on the “not quite as good†side. Skip’s death, Sam’s reaction, and overdue justice are the center of the story, but I feel like Ms Force belabors the point. Most of the book is continuously repeating how great Skip was, to the point where it was just cut and paste storytelling. The reason it bothered me so much was that it made the investigation rushed and kind of pointless. It seems like the whole case was investigated and wrapped up in a very small portion of the book, and most of it pretty unbelievably. Characters who’ve never appeared in the series, and didn’t actually appear in this book, other than being talked about, were responsible for these heinous crimes. I thought it was a flimsy slapped-together reason that was just thrown in to wrap up the story line. The one recurring character involved in the crime didn’t make much sense to me, as there had been no foreshadowing whatsoever to indicate he was an evil person willing to see one of his best friends killed to protect himself. It would have been more in character for him to have set up a sting to catch the bad guys than to have him set up his friend to be murdered. This was a huge miss to me.Another plot point I found unbelievable was Sam wanting to set up and be centrally involved in a support group for relatives of violent crime victims. In every book, Sam is so overworked and overwhelmed by her job, she rarely sees her family. It stretches the imagination for her to be Second Lady, dedicated homicide detective, wife, mother of 3, and have time to lead a support group. It’s really not necessary for her to be Superhumanwoman. That’s probably nitpicky, but it’s really not feasible the way the character is written.
I rarely give 5 stars to a book, but this one deserved it. I've read every book in this series and this one stood out. It was evident that Marie was thinking of the loss of her own dad as she wrote this novel. Having gone through that loss myself, I know all of the feelings and all of the regrets and all the memories that hit you when going through the grieving process. She hit all of them and the story of Sam solving her dad's murder was so well written. It grabbed me and held on until I got to the end. All the novels in the series are stand alone but I recommend reading the others first or some of this one might not make as much sense. The whole series is worth reading anyway. If you're a fan like me, this was easily the best work Marie's ever done. I highly recommend it. And to Marie: Bravo!
Sam’s beloved dad Skip passes away and Sam is left reeling and more determined than ever to finally bring to justice Skip’s killer. From start to finish, Fatal Reckoning was very heartfelt and emotional and the discoveries Sam and her team make along the way in trying to solve who shot Skip were mind boggling, and to me as a long time reader of the series, I also felt that sense of betrayal. It just takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions: from sadness to numbness, to anger, and acceptance.IMHO, this book is the best one yet. You can feel how personal this one is to the author. It is very well written and as heavy as the story is, it still has all the elements that we’ve loved from previous Fatal books: witty and humorous exchanges, particularly between Sam and Freddie, aww-inducing scenes from Scotty and even the littles, and the combustible chemistry between Sam and Nick. I also love how Sam was able to see a silver lining: Skip is now free from pain and can now dance and party it up in heaven, the way he was before his shooting. And to have that confidence to know and understand her father, and to have the strength to honor his DNR, just speaks to Sam and Skip’s close relationship.I will definitely miss Skip but I also look forward to more of Sam, Nick, Scotty, the littles, and the rest of the gang!
My mind is blown! I had no doubt that Ms. Force would give Skip's untimely and unexpected death the respect it deserved, but the aftermath and bombshells that were dropped in the investigation leading to his killer were unbelievable, yet highly satisfying. Book after book I get sucked into the action, romance, mystery, and drama, and am always left wanting more once it's over. This book was no different. As much as I would love to see Sam and Nick catch a break from the chaos that is their life, I have a feeling that wouldn't be be nearly as much fun to read. As always, I cannot wait until the next installment
There's no spoiler in extending sympathy for Sam's excruciating loss at the beginning of this book. There would be many spoilers if more of the story were discussed. This book is too good to do that. Suffice to say that Sam and Nick are strong together , Scotty is adorable, the littles are becoming more" of the family "than before and all the many people in their lives are part of this extraordinary book. I can't say I enjoyed every word , because of the sorrow, but I hung on every word.
