Excellent book for those of us who grew up during the Silver Age era. Great re-cap and trip down memory lane. Definitely add to your collection!
5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it.
Was a gift. He is adding it to his collection.
It's pretty good from a visual & design standpoint, as well as covering all the major and minor superheroes of the Silver Age. I was less enamored with the idea that the author had to reference his own POV on everything as he felt about it in the 1960s. The worst part though, is the inclusion of several intrusive sidebar articles devoted (quoting from the back cover blurb) "Movie tie-ins with superheroes who are the biggest stars of the silver screen and central to modern pop culture", in a move that screams desperation as an appeal for acceptance of the legitimacy of old comic books (and of course, the people who read and collect them) to the mainstream. As if somehow having a multimillion dollar movie franchise in the 21st Century is proof of the cultural relevancy of comic books published some 50-60 years earlier. Who really cares? Do we really need this book to educate us about current movie franchises? It's completely irrelevant to the 1960s -- a complete waste of those pages, and jarring to the overall tone the book otherwise sets -- it yanks you out of the nostalgic past, back to the present. If Tosh wanted to talk about comic book influences on other media, why not stick to the topic and talk about superheroes on television (no significant coverage apart from the 1966-68 BATMAN live-action series) in the Silver Age? By which I mean, the Filmation, Grantray-Lawrence, and Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon adaptations of comic book superheroes that were made in the 1960s.The other thing here that screams desperation is the constant quoting of high prices paid for copies of certain comic books. If the book was being sold as a price guide up front, then it is what it is, but... Okay, I get that Tosh works for an auction house that specializes in high-grade copies of comics sold to well-heeled collectors for exorbitant sums, but somehow the constant price quotes grate on me, as well as coming off as a self-serving promotion for the author himself. Yes, we get it. "Joe Average" is only interested in the nerdy little hobby of comic books to the degree that he can relate it to $$$ cha-ching!! I guess it must be true, because when someone finds out I read comics, every conversation that begins for me starts out with a question about what did I think of this or that comic book-based blockbuster movie, or what's the most valuable comic book I own. It seems like the non-comic book reading public just can't relate to anyone having an intrinsic love for the storytelling medium of comics, and it gets a little annoying. I certainly don't need to buy a book that takes the same approach. The information about the comic books of the Silver Age is good in itself, as is the photography and design of the book. The other stuff I could have lived without.
This is beyond awesome! The illustrations are beautiful and colorful. I love revisiting my youth through these pages. Growing up in Brooklyn, I remember waling down Flatbush Ave to go to the local comic book store with my cousin to buy the latest Spider-man issue, Lol. In Rise of the Superheroes, the extent of the information used to describe the evolution of these comic superheroes is superb. I enjoyed reading all the relevant information as it pertains to comic superheroes today and remembered all the comic books that I have read and still read today. All of my favorites were included (DC and Marvel) and even some that I had not read as a child. This is a perfect gift for both children and adults. 5 Awesome-Nostalgic Stars!!!!!
Rise of the Superheroes by David Tosh is a fun autobiographical and historical journey through the Silver Age of comics in the 1960s. Tosh breaks up the era into four distinct time periods as he follows the evolution of the heroes and his own love of the genre. He explains the boon of many of our favorite characters (The Hulk, Iron Man, The Avengers) as a response in part to the passing of the Comics Code of 1954. While hitting on the most popular stars of the era, he makes strong connections to the current versions, Black Panther, the surge in superhero films and TV shows in recent years, and even Sheldon’s love for The Flash!I enjoyed Tosh’s personal anecdotes and the story of his developing appreciation growing up in the 60s in the “In My Neighborhood†sections. Also of interest are the pictures of many covers and pages which are chosen to highlight the iconic characters: Superman, Spider-Man, Thor, Batman, and The Silver Surfer. He includes recent auction prices on each piece of memorabilia and a short chapter at the end about collecting.Rise of the Superheroes is a very good reference book for a niche of collecting and research in one of the best eras of comic book lore. Check your grandmother’s storage locker! She might have stashed away those old comic books, or get this book and dive in.Thank you to NetGalley, F+W Media, and David Tosh for the advanced copy for review.
Like many other children in the United States, comic books played an integral part of my childhood. Batman, Superman, the Punisher is synonymous to my childhood as ice cream and the beach is to the summer. I was super excited when I saw "Rise of the Superheroes" displayed because I remember spending the days on end reading comic books. The book is part reference and part personal recollection of the author. Tosh speaks about the brief history of comic books during the Silver Age while weaving his personal experience. The book is filled with beautiful photography along with information about sale prices for the comic books. The history is a bit brief so people expecting in depth analysis or history might be disappointed. However, I found this book to be a fun and engaging read. I like reading the early beginnings of Stan Lee and the many transformations of different comic book heroes. It also makes a perfect coffee table book.**Disclosure - I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion**
