Review
'A prospective buyer of Allègre's new book on Isotope Geology will immediately want to know if it might supplant the classic and long-time favorite of the similar title by Gunter Faure. While similar in coverage, many recent advances are only to be found in Allegre's more recent book. Importantly, Allègre's book utilizes a novel and very effective use of "worked problems" ... an extremely useful pedagogical approach. This textbook will be useful for a wide audience, from undergraduate generalists, to graduate students learning the nitty gritty tools of the trade, to senior practitioners such as myself who need a refresher in some forgotten arenas.' - Stanley R. Hart, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution' ... written by one of the leading geochemists for over four decades. No stone has been left unturned, whether it comes from the interior of the Earth, from the oceans, or from other planets. It is written in Allègre's unmistakable style, inordinately clear and sharp. Difficult concepts are presented without concession but are made accessible to a broad readership. A bridge between foundations and the cutting edge. A must-have for any classroom and personal library.' - Francis Albarede, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon'This book, written by a most prominent geochemist, is an excellent book for anyone (from serious researchers to the upper-level undergraduate students) who wishes to learn the history, principles and applications of isotope geochemistry to geological problems.' - Hiroshi Ohmoto, Director of the Astrobiology Research Center, Penn State University'This exceptionally detailed, comprehensive work translated from the original 2005 French edition will be an asset to many readers, given the ever-increasing use of isotopes in the geosciences. ... Geochemist Allègre (Institut de Physicque du Globe de Paris, who has designed the book based on years of thoughtful teaching of the subject, offers and enthusiastically written text ... Allegre provides numerous vignettes on the history of isotope geology, illustrates important concepts through landmark case studies, and provides useful worked problems for students. ...the perfect all-in-one resource on the subject. Highly recommended." - CHOICE'I can rave about many ... aspects of this book. The most striking is Allègre's amazing ability to articulate concepts through simple and elegant figures and prose ... Allègre's book represents a long-awaited contribution, which complements those by Faure and Dickin... This book is accessible to all, not just geochemists, but also geophysicists. last, I much prefer the purple-laced Kadinsky cover of the original French edition, as it looks much prettier on my bookshelf.' - Elements'... written by one of the most recognized and appreciated scientists in the field of geochemistry ... Allègre always stays in close connection with geological or cosmic processes, thus making a reader immediately aware of the relevance and significance of isotopes in earth and planetary sciences.' Robert Anczkiewicz, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, PolandThis is one of those all-too-rare books where a prominent scientist captures both the broad historical context of a particular field, along with many facets of current research in the field. ...it is very readable considering the specialized technical subject. It will undoubtedly become a standard text in the field." The Leading Edge

While the Isotope Geology has a lot of great information, and starts off on the right foot, it lacks important details if this is to be used as an introductory text. I spent a quarter with this book, giving it every chance I could, but in the end, it wasn't useful. Primarily this is because the book assumes you already know many tricks used by geochemists. This means that you may never figure out how to solve examples or problems given by the book. It lacks introductory problem solving methods in isotopes and nearly never shows you how to solve example problems. This is bad if you learn by example.Isotope Geology also jumps around very much. It talks about U-Pb systems in one section, then suddenly, out of the blue, returns to the discussion many pages later making for a very fragmented read. The same can be said for Sm/Nd systems. For example, Epsilon notation is treated many pages away from the introduction of Sm/Nd. The index does not offer any help; just a list of pages with no bold indicating heavy treatment of a subject. This means that finding information on a specific isotope system can take some time.It has a lot of great information on cosmogenic isotopes, nucleosynthesis, and using isotopes as tracers of global processes. It has interesting text on Ar/Ar. It does have all your basic chronometric equations and a basic appendix of common values. If you understand how to get to the point where you can use the dating equations, you'll probably be happy with this book as an addition to your library. You may learn something new. However, if you're a student new to isotopes with lower division chemistry and physics completed, you'll be lost by Chapter 2 and need extensive outside help learning how to solve isotope problems. I can't stress enough that this book almost never shows you the logic behind solving problems or examples given. A website showing steps for every example would be extraordinarily helpful in learning the material and make this book a must have. Until then, I don't recommend it.
This is one of the greatest geoscience textbooks ever written; and it was also written by a geology legend. Amazing clarity, and beautifully organized with well-written problems.
As editorial review refers, Prof. Claude Allegre is a greatest researcher in geochemistry. This book can be useful for introduction to isotope geochemistry in primary undergraduate course. It reviews fundamental theories and techniques in isotope geochemistry, and some important or major applications. The discussion for errors and statistics in radiometric dating (chapter 5) is one of the most comprehensive and concise. This is not a large book and limited applications are only introduced, and the auther compensates for the limit with supplementary topic lists at the end of each chapter and further reading at the end of the book. The topics and works seem collected into the book with some bias. The auther did not refer to works of Prof. Kenneth Farley of Caltech, Prof. Chris Ballentine of Univ. of Machester, Prof. Bernard Marty of CRPG-CNRS, Nancy, or some other great geochemists. Though it may be the auther's preventing readers' confusion confining description in basic and general, it could prevent readers from many important works in modern isotope geochemistry. If you are an undegraduate student of geochemistry, or had once given up for Faure's Isotope Geochemistry, this book can be a good guide to the world of isotope geochemistry, then you should advance to Faure's. If you are a professor who has a lecture of introductory geochemistry, you should assay to use this book as the textbook of your lecture, and must make a comprementary lecture note for a class in use. If you are a geologist or some kind of researcher who intend to use isotope geochemistry for your research, you must read Faure's first instead of reading this Allegre's: you do not have to read all of comprehensive Faure's, but all part I and some of part II depending on your specific interest. If you fall over yourself in Fauer's part I, the Allegre's may supply good help for recovery. For the specialists, what is necessary to say other than this is the great Allegre's book?
