This book can be condensed down to 20-30 pages of useful content. It's intended for RV'ers, and has some useful information and tips, but for the most part it covers the obvious (do people really need an explanation of the metric system?). Many more maps would be helpful (there's only one in the book, too high-level to be of any use), and it's loaded with gorgeous pictures (most of which have no caption or location), Then there are inconsistencies -- one chapter talks about bringing everything under the sun along on your trip (seriously .. a blender and a microwave?), and the next talks about how to lightweight to save gas. Some trips use 300 daily mileage, others 450 .. just seems random and not very well organized or consistent. I'd love to see some links to useful web sites, versus the author's specific turn-by-turn instructions. It's OK -- just not great.
This book is a must have for those traveling the Alaska Highway. Lots of suggestions for Pre trip, what to see, where to buy fuel, how far to expect to drive per day, where to stay whether lodging or camping.
I am sure this is great for RVers but we went 7500 miles for 5 weeks around Alaska on a motorcycle. I had hoped I would get some info about riding a motorcycle up there and back! I should write my own book now. It sure would have been helpful to have some info on motorcycle travel. We had an amazing adventure but we planned every little thing long in advance. Some hints and tips would have been nice but we did it on our own! Greatest adventure EVER!
Are you going to take a trip on the Alcan Highway? Then you need to get this book. It covers everything you could ever want to know plus many other suggestions that will keep you safe and allow you to have a great adventure. The author gives a personal touch in guiding you through Canada and up to Alaska. Since he and his family have taken many trips, he is able to give a more personal glimpse of not only the most sceanic and interesting but the more practical angle on this trip. My husband loved this book so much that he read it in one day and plans on reading it again soon. We are going to carry it in the cab of the truck for reference. If you are a fisherman, Ron gives great fishing advise too. This book is really helping us put together our trip.
The book is well written and beautifully illustrated. Provides good overview information for the Alaska Highway. Potential travelers might also want to purchase The Milepost which is significantly more detailed and provides almost mile-by-mile coverage of 30 major routes. Individually they are both good, together they provide an excellent travel library.
I found a guide to be very informative up-to-date and relevant. I'm not for sure and some of the reviews of them saying the information was outdated, I wonder if they purchased older versions and not the latest revision? This is a must I think for any traveler heading across the Al-Can. We will be making the drive ourselves from Florida to Anchorage in April. This will definitely be a traveling companion with us :-)
The tips in this book are great! It is very easy to flip through and find what you are looking for in a hurry, which will be nice while on the road. It's also smaller and lighter than the milepost which can be a bit bulky while traveling
The author’s first hand account lends credibility to this guidebook. This is required reading for anyone making the journey for the first time. Highly recommended!
